Collaboration and Chat: Recipiency in Online Math Problem Solving
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper, we examine ways that participants in online math problemsolving chat sessions dis-attend and attend to postings by other participants and the ways that participants design their postings to elicit responses from recipients. This is consequential in terms of the design of CSCL systems that use chat as the basis of participant interaction. By developing a proper understanding of the affordances of chat systems and the structural constraints they place on the moral organization of interaction, we can begin to anticipate and address issues related to the achievement of collaboration.

Sustaining Group Cognition in a Math Chat Environment
Learning takes place over long periods of time that are hard to study directly. Even the learning experience involved in solving a challenging math problem in a collaborative online setting can be spread across hundreds of brief postings during an hour or more. Such long-term interactions are constructed out of posting-level interactions, such as the strategic proposing of a next step. This pap...

The Math Forum is an online resource center for pre-algebra, algebra, geometry and pre-calculus. Its Virtual Math Teams (VMT) service provides an integrated web-based environment for small teams of people to discuss math and to work collaboratively on math problems or explore interesting mathematical micro-worlds together. The VMT Project studies the online math discourse that takes place durin...
متن کاملQuestioning and responding in online small groups engaged in collaborative math problem solving
Question asking is central to the interactions that take place in Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) settings. We investigate questioning and responding practices as interactional processes and explore their roles in online collaborative problem solving. We present our analysis of a 12-minute excerpt of three students doing math problem solving collaboratively in an online chat en...

In order to collaborate effectively in group discourse on a topic like mathematical patterns, group participants must organize their activities so that they have a shared understanding of the significance of their utterances, inscriptions and behaviors—adequate for sustaining productive interaction. Some methodologies applied in CSCL research—such as the widespread coding-and-counting quantitat...
